grow up + blow away

.♥.
one of us is gonna be here
and one of us is gonna be running
off alone into the great unknown.
you're not me, you're a model of freedom
all you need are your kicks when you need 'em
come and go, caught that slow alright.

with the one hand off the side
we get farther away in the blink of an eye

and it's the time we waste
swallowed into space
it's the time it takes
to blow away

hey you, yeah you gotta be leaving
say what you want, what you say
say anything
no one knows just how deep it goes.
we are old in your teenage tyranny
and all you need is a hunger to feed
I've got my own secrets though, say what?

with a heart full of mess and lore
we are doomed but we wanted more

it's the ride we take
the many winged escape
it's the bough we break
to blow away...
and we blow away

.♥.

I have to admit I loved dragging a bunch of helium-filled balloons around all afternoon. even when they kept hitting Brando in the face and blowing into the paths of strangers walking past. I felt whimsical and joyful, like a cartoon princess. now I remember why kids love balloons so much!

balloons are just such intrinsically happy things. they're kind of old-timey and even a little magical, the way they float and bounce and always look so pretty in bunches. balloons remind me of sweetness and simplicity. even when they blow away, and it seems kind of sad, there's something sort of free and lovely about it.

or maybe I'm just a little too into my balloons. hmm...

this was kind of a recreation of my Valentine's day outfit. I loved the retro look of the dress so much that I thought it deserved it's own special photo shoot, with props and all. we had so much fun with these pictures.

and, um, yes, that is a graveyard behind me. but it's not as weird as it seems; people here kind of treat pretty graveyards like little parks. there are benches and cobblestone paths and people eat lunch in here when it's sunny. I think it's kinda weird, but it is one of the prettiest places in the city centre.

and I didn't step on any graves, I promise.
although that would be really cool for a zombie photo shoot. maybe for next halloween...

she's a lady

things have been so crazy recently that I've neglected my "hollywood holiday" idea! I shall remedy this right now.

lately I've been kind of obsessed with Jackie O's style. it kind of started with the "J" themed party I went to last week, when I thought it would be fun to go as her. then I realized with dismay that I actually don't own any Jackie-esque dresses! ever since then I've been pining over a sleek 60s silhouette and mod mini dresses.

she's not technically "Hollywood," but she's been featured in enough films and on camera enough that I think it's ok to include the first lady in this little series.

Jackie O (who at the time of most of these photos was actually Jackie K, but we'll go with it) had an iconic style. there are few people who wouldn't recognize her likeness in a smart skirt suit and those big sunglasses. she may not have been a Hollywood starlet, but she dressed- and was admired- like one.

qualities that encapsulate Jackie's iconic look are modern, clean-cut, and elegant. she is famous for her structured outfits, from crisp white frocks to tailored jackets. ever the classy lady, Jackie's dresses were modest and understated. no spaghetti straps and poofy skirts here. instead, high necklines, like scoop or boatneck, paired with pencil and tulip skirts were key. add pretty details like bows and pillbox hats to soften the look.

Jackie was certainly the first lady of 60s dresses. she brought style and class to the dreary world of politics, and her loveliness was only enhanced by her impeccable taste.

here are some ways to emulate Jackie's star style!

add a cropped swing coat, a pillbox hat, and white accessories for the picturesque Jackie look!

oh, and make sure to curl your hair- in the 60s, bigger is better!

now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to pine over the many glorious Etsy dresses on my ever-growing vintage wish list...

black & yellow black & yellow

I found a new outfit for my yellow shoes. I am quite pleased. :)

I got this romper when I went to Calgary to submit my visa application. that's as in, entry visa to the UK, not visa credit card. you'd be surprised how many people are confused by that. anywho, I thought the romper was quite kitschy cute, and even though it hasn't been featured on this blog yet, I have worn it several times. it was one of my featured outfits when I got deported and lived out of one suitcase for a few weeks.

did I ever tell you my getting deported story? hmm. maybe I will sometime. in retrospect it's rather funny. in a sitcom episode type way, not a laugh out loud sort of way.

I'm sure it's clear by now that I go through phases of what colour combinations I really like. a while ago it was pastels. I was very into an Alice-in-Wonderland aura. then it was jewel tones and rich colours. recently I have been very into purple. now I'm moving into a "black & white and one other colour" phase, like a mod sixties look. I don't know what triggers these things.

we shall see where this new phase takes us.

my how the time flies

after being m.i.a for a while (and not the cool hip hop artist) I have small outfit post to share!

I tried to work things out so I would have posts while we were moving into the new place, but things went a little awry. we have very limited internet access till August 16, which is majorly depressing, but I'll work on some good stuff in the mean time!

I have my final Mad Men inspired look for you, but I must admit I'm not too crazy about it. it was a beautiful sunny day (for once) and it was my day off, so I sort of rushed the getting ready and the little photo shoot. also I look nothing like Betty. which is disappointing but I wasn't about to dye my hair blond.

dress- new look // wedges- seychelles fr. solestruck

I just don't think I'm glamourous enough to be a Betty. note the pasty white legs and the messy hair. I do have that "ice queen" look she always has, but that's not because I'm mean. it's because the sun was in my eyes.

this dress is one of those purchases you love in theory. I must have been having a skinny day (or imagining I was having one) when I bought it, because it is far too tight. I just loved it, and it was the only size left on sale! and I could squeeze into it, so I got it anyways. oi. hard to breathe in this baby. but look how cute!

ah well, it was only $15.

alrighty that puts me at today's internet quota. hope to be back sooner than later!
have a great week everybody!

all the right moves

I finally have the next Mad Men post for y'all! (why do I keep saying y'all lately? don't know, just seems to work in print.)

this is my Peggy Olson outfit. I actually wore it last week with the intention of posting it much sooner, but the weather was crap and not so good for photo-taking. so here we are.

this is one of two gorgeous dresses I got one Christmas from Leproust Vintage (I miss her blog!). I wore this one a few times, then kinda felt like it looked a little overwhelming, and sort of child-like. which apparently I am very much into right now. I recently fell in love with it all over again, which just goes to show I'm right- getting rid of clothes is never a good idea, because someday you will love it again and want it back!

anyways I think it's a perfect Peggy dress; plaid, collared, a-line, and cute!

dress- vintage // tights + belt- american apparel // hat- new look // jacket- primark // shoes- aldo

Peggy might not wear this particular hat, but she does seem to enjoy hats in general. and the jacket reminded me of her as well. add a pair of simple heels and fresh-faced make-up and there you have it! the 60s, Peggy style. well, Peggy, Sarah style.

other news of note- all the positivity paid off! we have a new, even better apartment in the city centre, and it's going to be cute & cozy when I'm finished with it! we're so relieved. and happy to have a view like this...

I think we live in the only building taller than four storeys for miles.
thanks for all your good thoughts!
