talking trash with your red liquor lips

October is here and autumn is well underway, but I'm sticking with sundresses as long as I possibly can. the weather lately seems fairly happy to oblige, so I thought it a nice time to break out this cute little vintage number before it gets too cold for bare arms. it reminds me of confetti and little girl birthday parties! so naturally I thought to wear it for my busy day of New Girl-watching and grocery shopping.

sometimes a girl needs a little glam in her daily errands.

the best accessories for any vintage dress? why a beehive and red lippy, of course! I also threw in my latest Broolyn Flea finds (I am getting so addicted to that place); cats eye sunglasses and a white bag.  the glasses were kind of a purchase of necessity- I forgot my sunglasses- while the bag was a little more exciting (for me, probably not so much for you. why would you care if I got a new bag? you wouldn't. if you do that's very sweet.). I've had an eye out for a neutral purse for a while now, and I've also kind of got this thing for chain straps that probably stems from my deep desire to own Chanel. anyway, this little beauty was only $20 so I snapped that up good 'n quick! I'm quite pleased with myself.

all in all I think the look came out as sort of 80s-does-50s. which is a lot like life, isn't it?
...I mean it probably is, but I'm not sure how. I'm just not coming up with a solid way to end this post.  is life just a mixture of one era emulating another, a swirl of colours and textures out of date and out of time? trying to form some semblance of cohesiveness in the bigger picture?
IT COULD BE.

you guys should know better than to listen to me. especially when it's late and I've been watching animal trainers on talk shows all night. it starts out educational, then it's just about seeing a lemur maul Conan O'Brien.
I should go now...
happy weekend! ♥

happy days

yesterday was a happy day.

last night Brandon and I met a couple new friends at a sports bar in Williamsburg to watch game 7 of the Canadiens vs. Bruins. it was a blast! had a couple pints of Brooklyn Lager, shared delicious chilli cheese nachos, got to hang out with terrific people, aaaaand the Habs won!
I'm sure if you are any sort of a hockey fan you knew that already, but I think it's worth mentioning.

I didn't go all out in the bleu, blanc, et rouge, but I did don an appropriately crimson skirt.

top- American Eagle // skirt- Urban Outfitters // tights- Joe Fresh // shoes- Modcloth // jacket- thrifted

the best part of all this is now Montreal is playing New York in the conference finals, meaning I can stalk the team fairly easily I have the chance to actually go to a game! my sister is coming to visit and we're going to see one together. my first NHL game is a playoff Canadiens game! GUYS I AM SO EXCITED. can't you tell from all the exclamation marks?

in fact, the next two weeks are shaping up to be pretty amazeballs. I'm so pumped that I kind of wanna rub it in your guys faces how much fun I'm going to be having... my sister's visiting, hockey game, going to Toronto to see my best friend, then another friend visiting here in New York, then her birthday, then my birthday! so much awesome in May, you guys. whodah thought?

I'm in my dorkalicious glee planning all the sightseeing. if travel agent was still a viable career choice, I would definitely rock that job. itinerary's are my jam.

if anyone needs a trip planned or a very inexperienced NYC tour guide, I'm yer guy. hit me up.
I will charge you in coffee and food truck gyros.
(it's ok, I'll be walking it off.)

lady in red

I've been drawn to wearing red lately because it makes me feel "dressed up" or stylish without actually having to try too hard. wearing a red dress? boom, you look nice. at least that's how it feels.

plus, this dress is red and comfortable. that's the ultimate feel-good combo. and when you feel good you look good! wait... no it's the other way around. but I'm sure it works both ways.

dress- Urban Outfitters // vest- American Eagle // necklace- gift // sandals- H&M

I'm feeling a lot better than I was over the weekend, but still not 100%. I didn't get to go to Coney Island, boo. here's hoping for good weather next weekend. tomorrow if I feel up to it Brando and I are going to take the Staten Island ferry. free close up of Lady Liberty, yes please!

I just really want to get back to exploring the Big Apple. there's so much yet to do!

a little bit of red

I finally gave in and got myself a red skirt. I've wanted a simple, red circle skirt forever, and this one had the swingy-ness and the price I was looking for. because who doesn't feel good with a little red twirl in their life?

I felt like this was a pretty tame outfit, especially for a style blogger, but I fear I may be the new subject of the fabled "Emperor's New Clothes" (aka The King's New Clothes, coincidentally) because apparently I left the house "half naked."

Brandon and I walked a couple blocks away to a store to pick up a few essentials; garbage can, broom, what have you. I got cat-called four times, all while Brandon was walking right next to me, and one of them was far too involved. this middle-aged guy with what sounded like very severe emphysema starting walking behind us and rambling about how I needed to put on more clothes, and I shouldn't leave my house like this, and how "nasty" it was. then he said I should watch how I dress because "there are some nasty people around" (to which I sarcastically replied "you don't say!") and he was only telling me this for "[my] own safety."

what. the. fudge.
(note: I really, really wanna curse A LOT right now, but since this blog is now linked to my facebook I feel like I should try and be a little more respectful of the English language/more delicate ears.)

I mean, guys. this outfit.

skirt- Urban Outfitters // tights- Hue // shirt- American Apparel // hat- Accessorize // bag- Marc Jacobs (gift) // necklace- gift // heels- Jeffrey Campbell via Modcloth

literally none of my womanly assets are highlighted by this loose, long-sleeve shirt and jersey skirt (jersey, the least sensual of all the fabrics). I'm wearing tights, and I wasn't even wearing these heels; they were much lower and much less "sexy," if you can even call a shoe that. I don't know, I like fashion, not fetishism.

the worst part is, not only was this jackass being rude and inappropriate to me for no reason, he had the nerve to imply it was for my own safety. soooo I'm asking for trouble because I'm wearing a skirt? in broad daylight? while walking down a busy street with my husband?

that is just such a loaded statement. no matter what might ever happen to me at the hands of a sexist pig, it will never be an excuse that I was "dressed like I was asking for it." fuuuuuu...dge... YOU.

I've had experiences with cat calling before (hasn't every woman? every. single. woman.) but not as frequently as it has happened since I moved to New York. I know it's more of a big city thing and men- scratch that; boys- do it just because it's anonymous and they have no idea who you are. but the odd thing is it seems to only happen on nice, clear days when there are tons of people around. it has never once happened to me at night, at least in the 2 1/2 weeks I've been here. so it's not even like I'm nervous or scared by it; it's just fricking rude. and disgusting. and annoying.

I know a billion things have been written on this subject, and I probably don't have anything new to add. so I won't bore you with all the different ways cat calling is ridiculous and pointless. but that shit really messes up your day.

and I just want to know, how do bloggers deal with it? does it happen to any of you, when you're out taking outfit pictures with a tripod? I'd feel pretty uncomfortable taking my tripod out in front of my building and taking pictures of myself at this point. actually I'd feel pretty uncomfortable wearing a short skirt, or high heels.
and not just because my feet are not used to them anymore and start to hurt within ten minutes...

ugh. why are people so shitty to one another?

but I will not let this blight of chauvinism and jackass-ery sour me on the wonder that is New York, nor will I let one ill-mannered douchebag convince my that my new red skirt is anything more/less than awesomesauce.

red skirt win!

defend the silver lining

sometimes people have bad days.
sometimes people feel lazy and sad and ugly for no reason.
and sometimes, all people need to feel a whole lot better is to wear a kick-ass pair of boots.
(a gorgeous view doesn't hurt either.)

dress- vintage // necklace- lia sophia, gift fr. my mom // boots- lammle's // bag- vintage

earlier I was feeling a little down in the dumps... sometimes I feel like good weather just exasperates my bad mood because I feel bad about feeling bad! but Brando and I went for a walk on the harbour front, bought a new record, and ate yummy hummus wraps. that really brightened my day.

also stars of the cheer-up-Sarah club, my new turquoise cowboy boots purchased in Canada's very own Cowtown! they're the perfect Calgary souvenir- I absolutely love them and have already gotten dozens of compliments.

Marilyn was right; give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world! or at least her own gloominess, haha.

ohmigosh.
only FIVE DAYS till the BIG DAY.
I'm not even sure what to do with myself.

it's been a very busy couple of days, and if I'm being quite honest, a very awful couple of days, too. I mean, sure, this week had it's moments- visiting the best friends ever, seeing the best band ever- but mostly I've been extra-frustrated with a string of bad luck lasting, oh... about two years now.

BUT tis the season to be jolly, not whiny, so let's forget about all that!
...except the part where my camera is now semi-out of commission, you should remember that part. cause it explains why these are pictures from last week. :)

sweater- h&m // pants + bow- american apparel // coat- suzy shier // booties- new look

not the most creative photoshoot in the world, but it's the best I got under the circumstances. and besides, I got a cute bow, guys!
such a cute bow.
I do kinda love this outfit, so it's a shame it couldn't get better representation on this here bloggity-blog. and hey, check out my new coat! $20, you guys. $20. fur collars all up in here. I predict it shall be my Christmas eve coat.

thanks to those who commented on my previous post! I always appreciate a nice comment. and to those of you who read but did not comment...
SHAME ON YOU.

naw, just kidding. you're cool too!
happy Christmas eve eve eve eve eve.
